![]() ![]() Got lucky, but I am not too excited at the prospect of having this happen on the Helios lenses, so guess I will practice on a few others before I graduate to the Helios.Īny advice on what to do about these rusty screws? Precautions would be great, but if they break off, solutions? Thankfully, I was able to use a slightly larger screwdriver and effectively "drill" into the broken screw and get it out. There were a few hiccups along the way, the most critical of which was, as you point out about in your last post, a screw breaking off because it was so rusty! This was the one that held the front barrel in place, so pretty much meant game over if I could not get it out. Took the better part of two days (mainly because of the DAMN aperture blades), but I am happy to report that the lens is alive and kicking and buttery smooth now. This had a focus ring that was crazy stiff and aperture blades that would not work at all. Neither of them survived the operation (well, technically they are still okay, but I did not bother to reassemble them fully or properly), but I learned enough to dare to get my hands dirty on a Pentacon 50 1.8 next. Both of these lenses were in bad shape (glass was beat up and the grease was so dry it was practically grinding metal when the focus ring was turned). ![]() I took apart a crappy Carenar 28mm and Super Carenar 135mm just for practice. If you get stuck, I should be able to help. If the optics are clean and no issue with the aperture, disassembly, cleaning, lubing, and reassembly is strait forward, I did my last 44-2 helicoid in less than 30 minutes. Good news, 44-2 is relatively easy to service with the right tools,a small flat blade jewelers screwdriver, and a lens spanner will be the main tools you'll need, a larger flat blade if you dive into the aperture. Have not discovered much on that front so far. Specifically whether the 81H was a different clone, or an evolution of zeiss designs by the Russians. Probably! I am more curious to know about the optical design differences though. I only found one or two comments that said "this is better than the 44 series", but nothing to substantiate that claim, or even any information on the lens design. I am particularly curious about the Helios 81H/N (50mm f2, I own an Arsat labelled version of this). ![]()
